Well, mobilegeddon has come and gone, so how bad was it?
When Google's recent mobile algorithm was introduced, and the great expectations leading up to it, webmasters everywhere were gearing up for a flood of new updates to their client's websites which weren't already 'mobile friendly'. And I was one of them. But how much of an impact did it really have?
In fact, most internet users barely noticed any difference to the search results. When most webmasters and worried website owners expected mobile search results to be affected dramatically, the truth is that only approximately 5% of mobile results have changed. Hardly a blip in the grand scheme of things.
However, should we remain complacent? Can website owners with non mobile friendly websites afford to give a big sigh of relief and carry on as if nothing happened?
Despite the lack of any significant impact, Google's mobile update should still be taken seriously, because, as history has shown, in the longer term, these updates do gradually have a major effect on search results.
My advice is... as soon as your budget allows, start planning to get your website 'mobile friendly' ideally using fresh 'responsive' designs that bring your website up to date and out of the dark ages.
Social engagement, mobile friendly websites, high quality content, reputable backlinks, are all now supremely relevant to good search results in the eyes of the almighty Google.
