3 Ways to get good search results for a service business

A well optimised website goes a long way to getting good search results with Google. Keywords in the title tag, description, content, links and alt tags all play their part, and creating optimised content pages designed to target specific areas in order to attract potential customers from that area is one way to get good results.

There are other ways that are just as effective, if not more so. Keywords in your domain name is currently a strong factor in getting a good search position, but this method needs to be used in conjunction with other supporting factors. For example, anchor text links from a high ranking site or directory related to your type of business can often be very helpful.

I have just implemented this ranking method for a client of mine who took it upon himself to register 3 domain names that were relevant to his business and the areas he wanted to gain business from. It's early days yet, but I expect to see his sites ranking high in the search results fairly soon.

A third way, and one that most service businesses should not ignore, is to get listed with Google Places. Depending on how much competition you have, getting listed in Google Places does not guarantee a first page listing, though it's entirely possible with the right type of optimisation.
